Medicated Fish Baths
One way to avoid the potential problems with
medicating an entire aquarium is to administer the treatment as a bath instead.
When a medicated bath is used the fish is removed from the aquarium for a number of minutes. The sick fish is bathed in a strong solution of the medication then returned to the aquarium.
Treating the fish disease in such a way has it's own problems. Medication manufacturers will usually only sell their products with instructions for treating an entire aquarium. Further research is always required to determine an accurate medication concentration and treatment duration.
As some fish are particularly sensitive to a given chemical it is unwise to use the medicated bath technique unless you are familiar with the fish's individual constitution.
