Fish Poisoning From Common Chemicals

Always take care when using household chemicals near fish tanks. Fish are very sensitive to many of the ingredients used in such products. Poisoning can easily occur from a small amount of stray chemical mist.

There is little that can be done for a poisoned fish besides cleaning the water and hoping for the best. Adding fresh activated water to the filter may be beneficial and a 25% or greater water change can help. If it is practical to move the poisoned fish to an old established aquarium this is even better.

Keeping a lid on the aquarium is one of the most effective precautions you can take. Insecticides can be especially toxic and should not be sprayed in the same room as an aquarium

When cleaning the outer glass be careful not to spray any pump or aerosol glass cleaning fluid in it's vicinity. Instead spray the chemical directly onto a damp cloth in a separate area then wipe the glass clean with the rag.

Aristopet has a calcium and lime glass cleaner marketed for aquariums. It has a citrus odor and probably uses fruit oils as the cleaning agent. I would still spray it on the cloth instead of the glass to be on the safe side but it should not poison fish.
