Hydrilla Plant
Hydrilla verticillata is a salt resistand plant found in many parts of the world. In Australia it is found in NT, QLD and NSW. Hydrilla is also found in Asia, Africa and parts of Europe. The species is sometimes referred to by different names such as hydrilla asiatic, hydrilla lithuanica, hydrilla japonica and the hydrilla ovalifolica. Officially Hydrilla verticillata is the only plant in the genus however.
Hydrilla is a stemmed plant similar in appearance to elodea except the leaves curl downward. It is dark green in colour with leaves growing all the way along the stem. Hydrilla has become a weed in some places which is testament to it's ability to grow rampantly. Reproduction occurs through cuttings which soon take root and show new growth. Tubers can develop underneath mature plants and regrow if the hydrilla's foliage is removed.
