Duckweed Plant
Duckweed is a great plant for shaded ponds and fountains where it will carpet the surface in delicate light green plants. Duckweed is an easily maintained plant that will grow given a spot with some filtered light or bright shade. Duckweed tends to burn in strong light but may adapt in southern areas of Australia.
Duckweed will help keep the water a little cleaner by removing wastes from the water as part of its growth process. Duckweed offers fish and other pond inhabitants shelter from birds and cats. When scooped from the water Duckweed is useful as garden mulch, duck food or fish food for goldfish, mollies or other green food eaters which may be tempted by it.
Duckweed may be useful for your indoor aquarium or Siamese fighter fish home given suitable lighting though it will cover the surface if not removed periodically. Duckweed is a very small plant and will not choke your pond to the degree that salvinia species will tend to.
Duckweed thrives at 15 - 18 degrees c and tolerates water temperatures of 5 - 25 degrees c making it useful in both unheated and moderately heated tanks and ponds in many regions of Australia. Duckweed will sometimes retreat to the bottom of ponds in cold weather to return in warmer months. Duckweed will tolerate a range of water conditions but prefers medium hard neutral water.
