Aquarium Fish Fungus
Fish diseases can be introduced with new fish or become a problem when aquarium stresses cause an outbreak. Visible symptoms may include small cotton wool lesions or thread like growths on the skin. The fungus will usually take hold where the skin has become damaged. It can also take hold where the slime coat has been damaged in stressed fish.
Treatment can be successful using methylene blue or other fungus treatments containing malachite green. Be careful handling methylene blue or malachite green as it will stain skin and objects. It is best to remove any shells, wood, ceramics and some plastics before use as these will become blue during the treatment.
Fungus can also form on eggs before they hatch. Methylene blue ahould be used used after the infected eggs have been removed. The treatment will help inhibit further egg fungus. Avoid other fungus cures other than methylene blue on eggs as they are more toxic to the developing fish embyos.
