Fin Rot Treatment

Fin rot is a bacterial problem brought on by poor water conditions. It can be recognised when the fish's tail and fins deteriorate and fall away leaving holes and jagged edges. Some blood smears may also be seen in the rotting fins or tail. The fish will often start to swim differently to compensate for the missing tissue.

The fin rot bacteria is opportunistic and will strike when fish are experiencing poor water. Ensure that you have been keeping up weekly water changes of 25% to prevent the onset of fin rot.

Fins can deteriorate rapidly but can grow back if treated correctly. Treatment should consist of a large water change followed by an antibacterial or antibiotic such as Melafix. After symptoms have disappeared keep up the regular water changes to stop the ailment from returning.
