Using antibiotics in the aquarium is a double edged sword. On one hand you have a sick fish requiring treatment, but when the antibiotics are used they may also kill the beneficial bacteria that live in the filter. You need an antibiotic which only affects pathogenic bacteria for minimal filter impact. When you choose an antibiotic especially for aquariums this is how it should be formulated.
Most antibiotics available off the shelf for aquarium use are generally quite mild to the fish. If you are sure you need to treat a bacterial infection then their use may have fewer side effects than other treatments such as broad spectrum solutions.
