Hang On Aquarium Filters

hang on filterHang on style filters are most often used in small to medium aquariums. They attach to the top of the aquarium where water is pumped up through a tube and returned to the aquarium via gravity. Water is drawn upward with an impeller and passes through filter media on the way back to the tank. A constant trickle can be heard unless the aquarium water is very high.

Such hang on filters are easy to maintain because the whole unit is outside the aquarium. Filter media can be replaced without disrupting your fish. Hang on filters also save your aquarium space by not taking up any internal volume.

If there is one drawback to this type of filter it is the fact that it will not be suitable for aquariums with hoods. If your fish tank has a lid this may also cause some interference.
