Aquarium Filter Wool Fiber
Polyester filter wool is an excellent filter medium for box style aquarium filters. It will mechanically separate particles from the water while providing a home for helpful nitrifying bacteria. It's main use is in box aquarium filters where it is layered with activated charcoal. It is sometimes also used to fill a compartment of your sump filter or external canister filter.
This product can range in price from inexpensive overpriced so it is always best to shop around. Buying larger bags is more cost efficient. The bulk lot of filter fiber can easily be squashed into a much smaller space so compare it buy weight rather than volume.
Filter fiber can be rinsed and re used to reduce your Aquarium upkeep costs. When rinsing use aquarium water from the tank so that the biological filtration can resume faster. By using this old water instead of tap water the microbes remaining in the fiber will not be killed. These remaining bacteria will form the base population of the new microbial colony. Biological filtration can resume with haste allowing faster filter maturation. Always be sure to seed new filter wool with a small amount of your old filter media fiber for the same reason
Beware of allowing bristle nose catfish to swim into the fiber as it will catch in their gills and be difficult to tease out. If you are using a loose fitting box filter it is a good idea to secure it closed with some rubber bands so this cannot happen.
