Banjo Catfish

Bunocephalus species

There are several catfish species which are described as being banjo catfish. All have a flat wide body and brown mottled appearance. Darker patches and bands come and go with the catfish's changing mood. The skin is tightly stretched over the bony head plates allowing for a lumpy texture.

Banjo catfish are not particularly common but may be found in some specialty aquarium stores. They are a species for the dedicated catfish enthusiast.

Water - Varied range tolerated

Temperature - Will adapt to range of PH and hardness if not extreme

Feeding - Feed green food and protein for an omnivorous diet

Sexing - Females may become plumper

Breeding - Creates nest pit in gravel where eggs are deposited

Aquarium - Banjo catfish can be kept in community aquariums

Do not be alarmed if you cannot find your banjo catfish as they often bury
themselves in fine gravel. The flat body is ideal for keeping a low profile.
